Stoffel Fourie received his PhD in Exploration Geophysics from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is currently the Chair: Research Development in the Faculty of Engineering at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in East London, South Africa. His research interests are geared towards “Lithospheric Exploration” using Geophysics and Space Geodesy for Geothermal Energy and improved approaches in infrastructure development. Using geophysics and materials science, he is currently involved with new approaches to road and railway development by improving knowledge of the base on which this infrastructure is developed (ground surface, near subsurface, structure and material). This contributes towards a more informed and realistic development approach. He is also interested in “Alternative Teaching Environments and science Outreach” with a strong focus on rural areas in South Africa, and is driving and developing a Science & Technology Train to take research, teaching at all levels, science outreach and community service to alternative levels. He is also involved with the development of solar and wave energy systems for groundwater applications and desalination.
