Integrated interpretation of FTG, magnetic, EM and geological data, with hands-on exercises
JAMES REID
Director of Mira Geoscience Asia-Pacific, Principal Consultant at Mira Geoscience
James is a Principal Consultant with 33 years’ experience in mineral exploration. He is currently Director, Mira Geoscience Asia-Pacific. He provides new geoscientific insights to complex mining industry challenges. James has a broad interest in integrated interpretation of geophysical and geological data and has a talent for finding models that answer all the data. He has extensive expertise in the planning and quantitative interpretation of electromagnetic and electrical methods, particularly the application of airborne electromagnetics to mineral exploration and groundwater geophysics. James’ wide spectrum of professional experience and his problem-solving skills give him the ability to handle difficult or unexpected technical challenges. Before joining Mira Geoscience, James was a lecturer in Geophysics at the University of Tasmania from 1999-2006, and a consultant with Geoforce and Groundprobe Geophysics from 2006-2012. He has an MSc in geophysics from the University of Sydney and a PhD in geophysics from Macquarie University. James is based in Perth.
Kristofer Davis
Director of Research and Development at Mira Geoscience
Kristofer Davis completed his PhD in Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines. Prior to joining Mira Geoscience, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher and Research Assistant at UBC, working on several advanced problems in geophysical inversion and focusing, amongst other research topics, on the development of software workflows and applications to support constrained geophysical inversion. Kristofer has been a critical contributor to the development of Geoscience ANALYST Pro Geophysics, VP Suite, UBC-GIF, and SimPEG interfaces. He is based in Montreal.
Colm Murphy
Chief Geoscientist at Bell Geospace
Colm Murphy is Chief Geoscientist at Bell Geospace, a world leader in airborne gravity gradiometry. He obtained his BSc in Geology from University College Cork and holds a PhD in geophysical data interpretative studies offshore Ireland from University of Galway, Ireland. Colm has 30 years experience working with airborne geophysical data for sub-surface geological mapping, data integration workflows and project design. Colm’s leadership has seen many successful survey projects using FTG, Gravity and Magnetic technologies assisting exploration worldwide from near surface to depth, from prospect scale to district/basin scale for minerals, geothermal and energy related programmes. He leads the teams at Bell Geospace that design and implement FTG solutions for complex subs-surface imaging projects.

About This Event
This course will provide the interested geoscientists with an introduction to the knowledge and skills necessary to combine FTG, magnetic and TDEM data for minerals exploration. At a time when explorers are looking for deeper and under cover deposits, the workshop will demonstrate the value of gradiometric data to solve these challenges, and the additional insights that can be gained by interpreting FTG data with other data such as magnetics and TDEM. This will be illustrated by recent case studies and working on data from a recent exploration project. The focus of the practical exercises will be on the FTG data, but integration with other datasets will also be addressed. The course will start with basic introduction to the methods and their application, from survey design to processing and interpretation. The hands-on and main component of the course involves using Geoscience ANALYST Pro Geophysics, a modern, interactive platform for the analysis and modelling of geophysical data to build integrated interpretations.
What I Will Learn
- Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry for Mineral Exploration: from survey design to interpretation, an overview. Through various case histories we will explore how FTG adds to exploration portfolios by extending knowledge of deep undercover geology unlocking prospectivity.
- Learn how to build up integrated interpretations of FTG, gravity, magnetic, and EM data using Geoscience ANALYST Pro Geophysics
o Learn advanced geophysical interpretation with Geoscience ANALYST Pro Geophysics.
o Import, visualize, and process your geophysical data.
o Using VP Suite, and/or SimPEG, undertake inversions of potential fields and EM data.
o Synthesise the results in Geoscience ANALYST Pro Geophysics.
Prerequisites Required
- Some knowledge of gravity and magnetic data for exploration is an advantage but the course focuses on applications rather than theory, so that geoscientists with a geological background can benefit.
- Basic knowledge of Geoscience Analyst will be helpful.
What Should I Bring
- Mira Geoscience will provide training licenses of Geoscience ANALYST Pro Geophysics to participants, but participants will need to provide their own laptops.
- A suitable laptop (see https://www.mirageoscience.com/faq/ )
