GEM has had a long and storied history – starting as Geophysical Electromagnetic Systems, a consulting partnership. The company incorporated in 1980 as GEM Systems, and is now known in industry as GEM Systems. This work was completed in 1983 through a research grant and led to the first of an innovative series of magnetometer/gradiometer technologies featuring three main physical principles – Proton quantum magnetometer, Overhauser quantum magnetometer, and the optically pumped Potassium quantum magnetometer. GEM Advanced Magnetometers is a supplier of magnetometers, gradiometers and magnetic sensors for Earth Science, Geophysics and other applications. With more than three decades in the research and development of equipment for geophysical exploration, GEM is also known for its service and support – featuring knowledgeable magnetics professionals and the industry-leading three-year warranty program. GEM Systems developed the DRONEmag™ (GSMP-35U/25U) to be the first lightweight, high sensitivity magnetometespecifically designed for UAVs. The sensors are based on GEM’s popular optically pumped Potassium Magnetometer sensor, which offers the highest sensitivity, absolute accuracy and gradient tolerance available in the industry. The 0.2 pT sensitivity potassium magnetometer forms the coreof GEM’s UAV solutions.

www.bellgeo.com

Bell Geospace has been at the forefront of Gravity Gradiometry for over 30 years. Bell Geospace provides exploration companies with Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry (FTG) and magnetic data to enhance sub-surface models and de-risk exploration projects.

Explore Province to Play, Efficiently
Airborne geophysics with FTG allows fast screening and ranking of prospective areas at the province and district scale, de-risking ground exploration at prospect and play scale. Accurate and informative data enhances existing complementary data and fine tunes a strategy for future acquisition.

African Gold Exploration
Bell Geo's FTG, gravity and magnetic data acquisition technology is especially good at locating contact zones and faults, suitable for finding the mineralized geology which hosts gold. Bell Geo’s most recent gold exploration project took place in West Africa. Gaud Pouliquen and Colm Murphy can share more details about this in person at SAGA.
Energy-Metals Exploration in Africa
Geoscientific methods are more critical than ever for energy-supply sustainability. Structural and lithological information to demystify subsurface mineral systems is required on a new, larger scale. If you're exploring in the Kalahari and Zambian copper belt, ask us at SAGA about Bell Geo’s experience in Botswana, Zambia, South Africa... and beyond.

New Interpretation Methods
The mines of tomorrow are hidden beneath layers of sedimentary cover or nestled as subtle extensions to known deposits. While traditional airborne geophysics excel in detecting metal deposits near the surface, they struggle when encountering deeper targets or non-magnetic geological trends.

Exploration teams seek to deploy high-resolution technologies on surveys with closely spaced lines or stations covering extensive areas. These surveys should capture a broad signal bandwidth to map the deeper extensions and connectivity with shallow structures effectively. However, such practices are not always feasible due to challenging terrain, including water bodies, vegetation, restricted access, or the significant time and budget required to acquire such data across large areas. Bell Geospace's FTG technology overcomes many of these limitations. With our latest workflows, signal bandwidth resolves shallow complexity and allows confident mapping at depth and will deliver geological structures and shapes within a given depth interval/window.

www.xcaliburmp.com

Xcalibur Airborne Geophysics is a Pretoria-based South African airborne geophysical company operating world-wide with a second administrative office in Madrid, Spain. We specialize in ultra-high resolution airborne geophysical surveys with our main offering being low-flying fixed-wing gradient magnetic and radiometric surveys. A new fixed-wing electromagnetic (TEM) system on an Air Tractor platform is currently under development and fixed-wing gravity surveys also regularly flown.

Our fleet of aircraft comprises six owned turbine Air Tractors and a PAC-750 with priority access to leased turbine Islanders (BN-2T), and Eurocopter and Jet Ranger helicopters. These all enable data acquisition at the lowest safe ground clearance possible, typically 10m to 40m. The survey height is generally only limited by the height of the vegetation and the presence of man-made features such as power lines, buildings and antennae. Because spatial resolution improves when flight altitude is reduced, low-level data provides significantly more detailed information for kimberlite detection, base and precious metal exploration, structural and lithological mapping and mine planning, while depth of penetration is not compromised.

The Air Tractors are particularly robust and powerful, thus providing excellent rugged terrain draping capability, together with unsurpassed endurance and safety. The twin-turbine Islander aircraft are used mainly for regional gravity, magnetic and radiometric surveys. These aircraft have the capability of operating at low speeds (80 knots) and are ideal for gravity surveys over water for hydrocarbon exploration. Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys will soon be available with our low-flying towed-bird basic off-time XAG-EM system.

VISION OF SAMERDI

“To maximise the returns of South Africa’s mineral wealth through collaborative, sustainable research, development, innovation and implementation of mining technologies in a socially, environmentally and financially responsible manner that is rooted in the wellbeing of local communities and the national economy.”

THE MANDELA MINING PRECINCT,

officially opened on 4 May 2018, provides the opportunity to have a community of researchers working together in the same space on related subjects both from an inter- and intra-organisational perspective.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINING EXTRACTION, RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION (SAMERDI) STRATEGY

The SAMERDI Strategy, as an outcome of the Mining Phakisa, provides a roadmap on how to work collectively towards technological solutions that will increase safety and productivity, and reduce costs to ultimately extend the life of mines by:

Improving the competitiveness of the sector and creating new opportunities for South African based companies to operate in areas along the entire value chain; and

Reposition South Africa as the world leader in mining RD&I by building human resource skills, capabilities, and capacities across industry, academia and the science councils, ensuring its sustainability.

The SAMERDI Strategy provides a roadmap on working collectively towards technological solutions that will increase safety and productivity, reduce costs, and ultimately extend the life of mines.

Thus the implementation of the SAMERDI strategy through collaboration and support from researchers (science councils and academia), government departments, mining houses (individually and collectively), and organised labour unions can be the solution to the challenges that beset the mining sector.

With the highest power and advanced processing, the SPECTREMPLUS system can has the ability to simultaneously map shallow (1-100 m) and deep (100-1000 m) features with a high level of resolution. Our team of specialists provides integrated 3D solutions for geological mapping, minerals exploration targeting including oil & and gas, geo-hydrological, and geo-engineering applications. The principal objective of developing these airborne systems is to enhance our ability to carry out effective exploration in areas where the geology is poorly exposed on the surface.

Spectrem is also conducting a significant amount of in-house R&D to ensure that the system remains state-of-the-art and satisfies the needs of its clients. In that respect, Spectrem was the first company to develop and commission an airborne magnetic gradiometer using the SQUID superconducting technology.
